English lessons for K-3

Using online educational games is an important teaching strategy for any learning environment. As mentioned earlier, useless gaming should be restricted in any classroom. However, educational friendly, online interactive child safe learning is a wonderful tool to help your students enjoy learning.

For young learners such as Kindergarten it is important to set time limits. With that I mean, don't use the PC as a babysitter but as an actual learning tool. Living in a technology based world, children will benefit from becoming familiar with keyboard skills at a young age.

A simple keyboard activity can for example consist of asking Kindergarten students to locate the alphabet letters on the keyboard. By introducing this teaching strategy you will see an improvement in letter recognition, keyboard skills and children recognizing correct spelling when offered two choices.

Class of Missing Teachers

Class of Missing Teachers was the headline as it claimed that “36,000 teachers are on waiting lists for permanent employment and another 7604 new teachers graduated from university last year, about 235 public school classrooms in western Sydney and rural parts of the state have gone unstaffed.”

As teachers are more and more pushed to put in quality teaching time and are forced to dedicate more time on paperwork one may wonder why the Government isn’t putting more effort into finding jobs for those they have trained in the education system.

An explosion in enrolments in Universities in NSW to complete teaching degrees is just another step towards a piece of paper which most will never use for the purpose it was intended… teaching in the classroom. Sadly the cost will outweigh its purpose and usefulness and many teacher graduates will seek employment in other areas.

Although one of the department reports said that there was an oversupply of primary school teachers and an undersupply of teachers in specific subject areas such as maths, science and technological studies, time will tell when the tables turn.

Perhaps Australia will eventually follow for example Thailand’s footsteps where teaching is one of the lowest paid jobs and teaching English is generally mocked as a low-paying dead-end job. In the meantime, for those teachers seeking employment… don’t be disheartened. Your teaching opportunity may be just around the corner!
